Mexican Resorts Are Hopeful As Reports Show A Sharp Increase In Travel And Spending In Mexico

New Resorts Open as Tourists Come Back to Popular Vacation Destinations

New reports have been released by Expedia and Visa which have revealed a sharp increase in interest in travel to Mexico in the past year.  According to Max Katz of Baja Real Estate Group, this news has been taking the Riviera Baja resort region by storm.

Mexican Resorts Are Hopeful As Reports Show A Sharp Increase In Travel And Spending In Mexico

Expedia recently reported that travel bookings made to Mexico from its various brands, such as Hotels.com, was up nearly 25 percent in the last 12 months. Visa also noted that the amount spent on its credit cards by inbound visitors had increased from $4 billion in 2009 to $4.4 billion in 2010. Visa described Mexico as being a “sought after destination.”

The information was revealed at Acapulco’s Tianguis Turistico conference in March, an annual event organized by Mexican tourism officials to boost the country’s profile as a top Latin American tourism destination.  Mexico’s Tourism Secretary Gloria Guevara Manzo said that the country had “made real and sustained progress in making Mexico safe and secure.”

These reports have made officials at Mexican resorts such as Naos Living, Sol Melia and Ritz-Carlton, very hopeful for the rest of the year and 2012, according to Katz.  Katz, a veteran real estate agent in Baja California who represents several high-rise residential projects, cites the country’s beautiful beaches and rich cultural heritage as the main attraction to tourists.

“With the extra dollars being invested into safety and security, we are looking forward to a more prosperous year ahead of us,” he said.

One of the newest resorts in Mexico to open is Naos Living, a $200 million project developed by Central de Arquitectura of Mexico City, which plans on opening 144 five-star hotel rooms within the next year to complement its luxury condos. Located in the Rivera Baja, the 20-story oceanfront tower has a prime location right across the street from the new convention center and will comprise 394 units upon its completion, split into three high-rise towers. Naos is also offering lockout units as an opportunity for ex-pat baby boomers looking for Mexico real estate, may it be a second home or a home with a sustainable community.

Later this year, Sol Melia has also announced that it will open two flagship resorts on the country’s stunning eastern Caribbean coastline.

Last month, Ritz-Carlton announced that it will open a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Los Cabos, a 124-villa complex with views across the Sea of Cortez and private infinity pools, butler service and outdoor fireplaces.

The majority of the interest was from the U.S., Canada and the UK, according to a report from Expedia, which described the country as one of its top three destinations in terms of traveler feedback.

Baja California Responds To Safety Concerns And Eyes Rebound In Tourism

The mayors of Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada, Mexicali and Tecate recently invited media on a three-day tour of the region to discuss the changes that have been made to ensure the safety of tourists. The Mission Times Courier was one of several media outlets from California, Arizona and Nevada that joined government officials on the tour.

Tijuana’s new mayor and police chief say public safety for tourists is a top priority. Mayor Carlos Bustamante says media reports of crimes involving drug cartels over the past several years have led many to believe Tijuana has turned into “a crime city”. Today, officials say that perception couldn’t be farther from the truth. Police Chief Gustavo Huerta credits heightened enforcement and training for turning the city back into a safe place for residents and tourists. Thanks to greater coordination among federal, state and local law enforcement, the city has seen a higher number of seizures of drugs. The city has seen a 30% decrease in crimes involving cartel members and a 40% decline in violent crimes and robberies.

The police chief says new training standards and procedures have also been implemented to make sure officers are fulfilling their obligation. More than 500 officers have been fired for failing to comply.

“We’re not going to put up with any corruption,” Chief Huerta said.

A new “tourist police” force has been put in place in tourist areas, including Avenida Revolución, a downtown area known for its restaurants and shopping. The bilingual officers are more easily recognized and are eager to help tourists during their stay.’ read more »

Calderon: Mexico to be World’s 5th Most Popular Tourist Destination by 2018

Mexico is already ranked 10th in the world, based on the number of annual visitors to the country and the amount of revenue that is generated.

Calderon: Mexico to be World's 5th Most Popular Tourist Destination by 2018

Calderon: Mexico to be World's 5th Most Popular Tourist Destination by 2018

On Monday, Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon announced plans for his country to become the world’s 5th most popular tourist destination by the year 2018. This announcement comes just weeks after declaring 2011 to be the “year of tourism” and on the heels of their new advertising campaign started last year, “Mexico, the place you thought you knew”.  According to the World Tourism Organization, the country is already ranked 10th in the world, based on the number of annual visitors to the country and the amount of revenue that is generated. Other contenders on the list include the US, France, China and Italy.

To bolster Mexico’s efforts to hit the number five slot, Calderon has outlined 10 strategic steps and 100 points of action, including advances in infrastructure via the construction of additional airports, highways and sea ports. In fact, flight service into and out of Mexico has already increased at a number of US airports, especially to popular tourist destinations like Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Calderon is also encouraging Mexican travel agencies, resorts and tour companies to more aggressively promote Mexico as the perfect vacation destination, in part by diversifying the vacation packages that are offered, infusing them with higher quality options and a wider variety of activities and destinations to choose from. “Mexico is much more than having better beaches,” Calderon said.

In 2010, official figures showed more than 22 million foreign tourists visited Mexico, with more than six million dollars US generated as a result. By comparison, this year Mexico’s tourism industry hopes to offer around 4 million jobs and to offer support for around 12 million additional jobs, with income projected at around 40 billion dollars US.

Las Gaviotas, Rosarito Beach, Mexico Sees Rising Home Values and Sales Once Again

In the last 6 months, 7 homes have sold in this little Mexican style village know as Las Gaviotas. Amazingly homes are selling from the low $200.000 to well over the million $$$ mark. Many people live there full time. Or they spend half the year living there, or even use it for a second home if the weather is bad at their primary residence. Las Gaviotas has a old world charm with stone streets and Architecturally interesting homes….298 homes in all line a sandy coastline with semi private beach . Almost everyone has a good view of the ocean. Lots of social activities and even a Spanish class on site in a setting that has been called the Beverly Hills of Rosarito.

Baja sales, just like the US sales were slowing down to almost none. With the cost of living on the rise in the US, and the cost of living here low, Mexico just makes good sense. read more »

The Mad Money Is in Mexico?

By: Tom Brennan
Web Editor, Mad Money

“It’s not such a bad idea to diversify away” from stocks, Cramer said during Monday’s Stop Trading!, “and buy real estate.”

The Mad Money host himself just acquired three new properties in San Miguel de Allende, a popular destination for American snowbirds in central Mexico. There is “no property tax,” Cramer said, the properties are “incredibly easy to maintain,” and there are “property managers everywhere.”

“I think that out-of-favor real estate in Mexico, that’s easily accessible to Americans, represents a great buy,” Cramer said.

Critics of the investment might point to the well-publicized drug-related violence happening in Mexico, but Cramer pushed back against that line of thinking.

“Mexico is a big country and not every province, every state is involved in the drug trade,” he said. “And San Miguel has to be one of the nicest places I’ve ever been.”

Rosarito Church Honors Mayor Torres For Security Gains & Other Improvements

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO—The Rosarito Beach Christian Church on Sunday honored outgoing Mayor Hugo Torres for security gains and other improvements during his three years in office.

Rosarito Church Honors Mayor Torres For Security Gains & Other Improvements

“It is our privilege this morning to honor a man who has provided us with three years of good government,” elder Richard Johnson told the congregation which is composed largely of expatriates.

Johnson added: “We have witnessed public safety and the judicial system be greatly strengthened.”

Torres at the service was presented with a Spanish language Bible by church member Tom Ward, as well as a donation to the Rosarito Boys and Girls.

Torres told the congregation that he had visited every Rosarito school twice during his time in office. Education and programs such as the Boys & Girls Club are vital to building a strong city, Torres said.

The outgoing Mayor also cited the role of religion in improving a community by strengthening values and thanked church members for their contributions to the city.

Under Torres’ leadership, more than 60 percent of city police were replaced even as the force was expanded. Crime declined 21 percent in 2009 and is down an additional 14 percent this year, to the lowest level ever recorded.

He told church members of the difficulties in accomplishing this and gave much of the credit to Director of Public Safety Jorge Montero, an army captain on leave. Montero survived an early assassination attempt to go on to direct reform efforts.

Torres said he also received personal death threats as the city cracked down hard and made it clear it was committed to eliminating corruption and organized crime.

“This is the way it should continue,” Torres said. “We have not finished the work.”

Tourism to Mexico jumps nearly 20%

By Hugo Martín, Los Angeles Times

In a surprising turnabout, international tourism to Mexico  showed a sharp increase this summer — a sign that tourists may be putting aside worries about the economy and fears of drug-related violence, analysts say.

Foreign visitors arriving by air to Mexico jumped to 7.1 million in the first eight months of the year — up nearly 20% from the same period in 2009 — with most visitors coming from the U.S. and Canada, according to Mexican tourism officials.

The biggest rise came in July, when tourist numbers grew 27.5% over the same month last year.

The increase came in spite of a rash of drug-related violence and kidnappings, primarily along the border, and the August bankruptcy of Mexicana Airlines, the nation’s largest air carrier.

The growth in tourism has been focused primarily in Mexican beach resort towns that have not experienced much of the violence.

In the first eight months of 2010, 7.1 million foreign travelers flew to Mexico, up 19.2% from the same period last year. Of those visitors, 4.33 million were from the U.S., 1.3 million from Canada and 200,513 from Spain, according to Mexican tourism officials.

The latest numbers are a significant increase from 2009, when international tourism to Mexico dropped dramatically after the outbreak of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu. But compared with 2008, international travel to Mexico is up only 6%.

Still, analysts say, the latest jump in visitors suggests that U.S. travelers feel more confident about spending on travel again and see Mexico as a good bargain for vacations.

“Memories of last year have started to fade,” said Anthony Concil, a spokesman for the International Air Transport Assn., a trade group for the world’s airlines.

The sharp increase in visitors to Mexico is also significant because Concil and other analysts have predicted only modest growth in travel worldwide. International air travel, for example, was up 6% in August compared with a year earlier, according to the International Air Transport Assn.

Hawaii has also seen tourism begin to rebound lately, but not enough to overcome the steep drop-off it suffered in 2009. In August, total arrivals by air to Hawaii were up about 11% from the same month last year, marking the ninth consecutive month of growth.

Mexican tourism officials attribute Mexico’s tourist increase to a marketing campaign that kicked off in July, with the tagline “Mexico, the place you thought you knew.”

“We have had all of these challenges, but we are in the right track,” said Alfonso Sumano, regional director for the Mexico Tourism Board for the Americas.

Local travel agents say the growth in tourists’ interest in Mexico comes from a pent-up demand to travel.

“I think there’s a perception is that it’s a good deal,” said Carol McConnell, founder of Around the Globe Travel in Huntington Beach. “But it’s mostly about being where the water and the weather is really nice.”

Jack E. Richards, president of Pleasant Holidays, a Westlake Village travel agency that specializes in vacations to Mexico, agrees. “The all-inclusive resorts offer exceptional value for the vacation dollar, which is still important to American travelers as they emerge from the economic recession,” he said.

While reports of drug-related killings and kidnappings continue along the border, most international tourists are staying clear of that area, visiting beach resort towns instead, Sumano said.

The number of visitors to Cancun, the easternmost coastal city, jumped nearly 31% in August compared with a year earlier; tourism to Los Cabos, on the southern tip of Baja California, increased 30%, according to Mexico tourism officials.

Southern California travel agents say U.S. tourists don’t seem too concerned about drug violence because they know to stay far from the border. “As long as you stay in the resort areas, you’ll have no problem,” McConnell said.

And several Mexican and U.S. airlines have stepped in to fill in the void left by Mexicana Airlines, Sumano said.

“We would like to spread the word,” he said. “The resorts are ready for the visitors.”
