A new office is already planned in the Guadalupe Valley, just north of Ensenada.

2. Appreciate your friends and family. When you’re 95 years old and you’re on your death bed, do you think you’ll be surrounded by your clients? It’s your friends and family who matter most.
3. If you have a dream, go for it.  Want to write a book? Visit Mexico? Learn to speak Spanish? Your dream doesn’t have to big–it could be one that people think is silly, or just plain nuts. It’s your dream, and you should go for it now because when you’re 75, you may not be able to do it.

Interest in Mexico tourism surges, despite safety worries

A leading hotel booking website has revealed a sharp increase in interest in travel to Mexico, as the country struggles to rebuild its reputation after an escalation in drug-related violence.

Earlier this year, US college students were warned against spending their annual spring break in Mexico, a sign of how serious authorities in some states believed the situation has become.

But it seems that not all travelers are being discouraged by the headlines resulting from Felipe Calderon’s war on drugs, launched in 2006, which has prompted a surge in violent incidents as the army struggles to crush the country’s drugs cartels.

Expedia revealed last week that travel bookings made to Mexico from its portfolio of global brands, which includes the Expedia and Hotels.com websites, were up nearly 25 percent in the last 12 months.

The majority of the interest was from the US, Canada and the UK, said Expedia, which described the country as one of its top three destinations in terms of traveler feedback.

The online giant made its comments at Acapulco’s Tianguis Turistico (March 25-28), an annual event organized by Mexican tourism officials to boost the country’s profile as a top Latin American tourism destination, where Mexico’s Tourism Secretary Gloria Guevara Manzo said March 24 that the country had “made real and sustained progress in making Mexico safe and secure.”

Ahead of the conference, financial giant Visa also noted that the amount spent on its cards by inbound visitors had gone up from $4 billion in 2009 to $4.4 billion in 2010, describing Mexico as a “sought after destination.”

No surprise then, that country’s beautiful beaches and rich cultural heritage are continuing to attract hotel chains, who are betting on an eventual end to the drug wars — at which point they believe the country is set to be a lucrative destination, thanks to its excellent location in the Americas.

Later this year, Sol Melia will open two flagship resorts, Paradisus La Esmeralda and Paradisus La Perla, both on the country’s stunning eastern Caribbean coastline.

Last month, Ritz-Carlton announced that it will open a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Los Cabos, a 124-villa complex with views across the Sea of Cortez and private infinity pools, butler service and outdoor fireplaces.

In the late 1960’s, the Gerson Baker Corporation from Marin County in Northern California began drawing plans and started construction on a new development in Baja Norte. The development was called, Las Gaviotas, located just south of Rosarito Beach.

For many years American tourists crossed the border and drove down to the Rosarito Beach Hotel to catch the sun and surf along the Pacific Coastline. As Baja became a destination point – an American developer decided he, too, would invest in Mexico.  His dream was to create a unique enclave of homes overlooking the Pacific Ocean where Americans could live and vacation year around.

Las Gaviotas – became a one-of-a-kind development – capturing the title of ‘The Crown Jewel’ of developments along the Baja Norte Pacific Coastline.  The original vision of San Francisco developer, Al Wilsey, was having a community of unique homes, washed in white with traditional Spanish red-tile roofs, highlighting the Mexican Colonial theme.

Full page advertising was placed in the newspapers surrounding San Francisco and people began to flock to Baja to see this new development.  Guests were flown from San Francisco to San Diego and driven across the border.  They were housed in some of the first cottages by the sea.  After hearing the sales pitch, many began signing on the dotted line and became the first owners in Las Gaviotas.

Included in the original development was a fully developed community with sewers, underground utilities, water filtration plant and community facilities such as a clubhouse, Olympic size pool, Jacuzzi, tennis and shuffleboard courts, and sandy beach.  Over the years Las Gaviotas has continued to live up to its reputation as being a prestigious development.

During this past decade, the homeowners association has continued to add additional community amenities such as a community library, mail and computer room; fully equipped exercise room with saunas; children’s park and putting green.  At the July HOA meeting, members approved an expenditure of $80,000 for a new tennis court for members and guests.

As Las Gaviotas continues to grow and develop, so has their homeowner’s association.  Community members have continued to be actively involved in the management of their community; making it the best operated Homeowner’s Association in Baja Norte.

When it comes to real estate, the old saying is: location, location, location.  When it comes to Baja – and you considering location, a buyer must first consider Las Gaviotas.  It has never been a better time to purchase a vacation, retirement or rental home in this community.  There are quaint bungalows to million dollar oceanfront homes.

Be cautious when calling an unfamiliar telephone number – it could be a costly international telephone call
One of my coworkers recently put an ad up on craigslist to promote a property, received an email response asking him to call back a number. (908 554 2787)
Essentially the email goes like this…

Hello I saw your listing and I am very interested, could you give me a call when you have a moment? Just have a few questions. I am on the road and will not have access to my email. Thanks Mark—809 554 2787
Fortunately he did an online search on the number before calling and saw that it was a scam in that there is a charge (around $5-$10 to call the number). Believe they are called EZ numbers.
In a fact sheet on phone scams, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission notes that calls to certain offshore locales, many of them in the Caribbean do not require the international prefix 011, so it may not be obvious you are calling a foreign number.
“In many cases, the return-call number is an international pay-per-call line, with a three-digit exchange that looks like an American or Canadian area code,” the federal agency says.
Be skeptical about area codes you don’t recognize, especially: 649 (Turks and Caicos); 809 (Dominican Republic); 284 (British Virgin Islands); 876 (Jamaica), or 758 (St. Lucia).
How Can I Protect Myself?
If you are presented with an ad for an information or entertainment service, or receive a call from such a company, you should remember:
•    Be skeptical of ads for services that claim they are “not a 900 number,” “LD rates apply,” or “no premiums apply.”  These services may be even more costly than 900 numbers.
•    Make sure you check your phone bill for charges you do not recognize.  Contact your phone company and long distance carrier if you see any error.
•    Be wary of area codes you do not recognize (i.e. 809 for the Dominican Republic or 664 for Montserrat).  You can check their location in the telephone directory or by calling the operator.
•    Tell your family that they need to get your permission before calling any long-distance services (domestic or international).  This applies especially to children.
