Benefits of Swimming, by: Miguel Sedano.

infinity edge Pool PDM

Infinity Edge Pool at Palacio Del Mar

Ancient Greeks and Romans built artificial pools for athletic training in the palaestras, for nautical games and for military exercises. Roman emperors had private swimming pools in which fish were also kept, hence one of the Latin words for a pool, “piscina”. The first heated swimming pool was built by Gaius Maecenas of Rome in the first century BC.

Swimming pools became popular in Britain in the mid 19th century. By 1837, six indoor pools with diving boards were built in London, England. After the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 and included swimming races, the popularity of swimming pools began to spread In 1839, Oxford had its first major public indoor pool at Temple Cowley, and swimming began to take off. The presence of indoor baths in the cobbled area of Merton Street, London may have persuaded the less hardy of the aquatic brigade to join. So, bathers gradually became swimmers, and bathing pools swimming pools.

After World War I and the departure of “long John” style swimming costumes, interest in competitive swimming grew. Standards improved and training became essential. read more »

Mexican Talavera. By: Miguel Sedano

Mexican Hacienda Kitchen

Mexican Hacienda Kitchen

Mexican Talavera tile roots date back to 15th century Spain. Many of the designs and patterns can be traced back to Chinese and Philippine origins while even older variations of this art form date back to 8th century Arab culture.

During the middle ages, craftsmen in Italy began experimenting with glazes and as a result many new colors were developed. When the Italians introduced the unison of the Arab, Italian, and Asian motif during the 15th century to Spain the Talavera ceramic was born. In turn, following the Spanish colonization of Mexico, the Spaniards introduced the new ceramic and Mexican artisans adopted it.

During the 1920s and 30s, Spanish Colonial Revival was one of the most popular architectural styles in the Southwest. Colorful ceramic tile as well as clay tile roofs, roughly plastered walls, arched doorways, and wrought iron window grilles create some of the key elements of this style. Inspired by the Panama California Exposition of 1915 as well as travels in Spain and Mexico, many architects found southern California the ideal setting for this type of architecture. The similarity to Spain’s climate and landscape was the primary catalyst for using the Spanish Colonial Revival style to transform houses, stores, offices, and even cities throughout California, Arizona, New Mexico and Baja California Mexico.

It’s often difficult to visualize what a particular pattern will look like once it is installed. In fact, the true beauty of Mexican Talavera can only be appreciated when the tiles are placed side by side and a pattern is created.

Visitors to 42037 Mision de San Diego in Mision Viejo Baja are often impressed by the hundreds of colorful tiles, as well as the other architectural crafts, which fill this Spanish Colonial Revival style mansion. Tile is found in nearly every room of the house, either as baseboards, stair risers, fireplace surrounds, wall niches, or window seats.

Another Day in Baja

This weekend in Baja !!
NEWS FROM BAJA:

Robby Gordon Monster Energy Truck Baja 500 June 6, 2009

Robby Gordon Monster Energy Truck Baja 500 June 6, 2009

Yesterday, two luxury power boats were passing each other in front of Calafia Resort and Villas at the tip of Descanso bay in Northern Baja, one going south and the other going north in what was a beautiful sunny day with surfers out all over and the Baja 500 race underway just south in Ensenada.

Today, while headed north toward the San Diego border, my wife noticed no less the 25 power boats off the coast near Playas. Was there some kind of boating event going on or were people just out enjoying another beautiful day in Baja?

Surfers have enjoyed 3 days of 4 to 7 foot sets from a new south swell which was really lining up in front of Las Gaviotas and to north at Calafia.

And to top it off the Monster energy truck driven by Robby Gordon won the overall trophy truck with a great finish time of 8:35:49 only to be topped by the pro class motorcycle team riding a Honda 450x with a elapsed time of 8:30.

Just another fun filled weekend in Baja!!!

Calafia Condos Will Be Hosting a Benefit Luncheon

Tijuana Kids

In Mexico Early childhood education (pre – kindergarten) is not compulsory: there are only a few Government supported early childhood centers. There is a need to expand and improve comprehensive early childhood care and education, for girls and boys, especially for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

For almost 30 years the Responsibility schools have given more then 3,500 children who live in and near Tijuana’s vast municipal garbage dumps a horizon beyond the smell, flies, and refuse. It takes a village, to educate a child. This non-profit organization relies on private donations to support schools and other community programs to assist families living in the Tijuana dump. Our primary fund raising event is an annual Gala and silent auction. In 2008, Cuba Gooding, Sr., a full-time Calafia resident, enthralled all Gala attendees at the Museum of Photographic Art in Balboa part, with his extraordinary performance. read more »
